For those who develop desires elsewhere, it may be a good time to plan a trip: plane tickets for certain destinations are much cheaper than usual. Europe 1 details some of these destinations, and discusses the reasons for this drop in prices.

Porto, Palma de Mallorca or even Quebec City… Some destinations have never been so affordable by plane, despite the context of inflation. For a round trip in economy class to Montreal in Canada, for example, you only had to pay an average of 346 euros this year, or 81 euros less than in 2019, according to data from the Kayak flight comparator. And the economy is even more impressive during off-peak times.

A fall in prices justified by two factors

Travelers have taken advantage of this windfall, like Clément, who didn’t hesitate for a second. “I wanted to take a vacation in mid-October, I found really cheap tickets, at 230 euros. I’ve never seen such low prices for Montreal,” he says at the microphone of Europe 1. “It made me decide to leave for Canada.” It’s the same observation if you travel to France: you have to pay 123 euros on average for a round trip in October, against 136 euros three years ago.

This drop in prices is explained by two factors, according to Jean-Pierre Mas, president of Travel Companies. “The first is the migration from air to train. Up to four hours, we choose the train rather than the plane, so there is a downward trend in prices. And on the other hand , the fact that Transavia replaces Air France on two main axes: Biarritz and Montpellier. This company is cheaper than Air France”, notes this expert. However, not all destinations are in the same boat: for the West Indies or Thailand, prices have increased by 50%.
