In the summer, Ukrainians are threatened with problems with light: power engineers explained the situation in detail

Scheduled repairs to energy infrastructure and generation facilities in Ukraine take place every summer and usually do not result in power outages for consumers. However, in 2023 Ukrainians will face a different situation, because through the occupation of the ZNPP and Russian attacks the total capacity of the energy system of Ukraine decreased.

Besides, TPP repairs may take longerbecause they got damaged. This was reported in “Ukrenergo”.

“Only disabled power units can be repaired – and due to the consequences of a full-scale invasion their ability to compensate is very limited.“, – the company explained. At the same time, during the war, power engineers cannot publish data on the operating capacity of power plants in the power system.”

Losses in Ukrainian generation, however, can be estimated by another indicator – installed capacity. This is how much electricity the power plants can produce (according to technical documents) as much as possible if they are all turned on together at the same time. Yes:

  • By the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the temporarily occupied territory already had 4 GW of installed capacity, including large Zuevskaya and Starobeshevskaya TPPs. They were occupied back in 2014;
  • in May 2022, there were already 21 GW under occupation, including the Zaporozhye NPP, which provided about a fifth of electricity generation;
  • in May 2023 after a season of massive attacks on the Ukrainian energy system installed capacity losses increased to 27 GW.

“In order to ensure a balance in the energy system, the energy industry also needs the help of consumers – especially in the evening hours. To do this, the use of powerful devices should be transferred from 19-22 hours to the night or day“, called the power engineers.

In turn, Ukrenergo promises to use all available reserves to maintain the stability of energy supply. The company notes that the warning about the shortage of power does not mean inevitable shutdowns consumers, but everyone should be prepared for this.

As GLOBAL HAPPENINGS reported, the fixed electricity tariff for the population – 1.44 UAH/kW*h for consumption up to 250 kW*h – covers only 28% of the costs of electricity production, its transportation and taxes. The market price is 5.5 UAH per sq.h. Therefore, the increase in tariffs for the population is inevitable.
