“There is a chance” to throw “Putin”: what are the USA and Germany preparing against Nord Stream 2

Recently, unexpected events have begun to unfold around the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, giving hope that the pipeline will never be launched.

The United States unexpectedly imposed additional sanctions against Putin’s project, namely against one company and two courts involved in its implementation.

At the same time, the new government of the Federal Republic of Germany did not even mention opposition to the pipeline in her coalition agreement.

President of the Ukrainian Analytical Center Oleksandr Okhrimenko in an exclusive commentary, “Segodnya” stated that the US sanctions are just a PR stunt.

They are not effective enough and are very “weak”, the expert says, and adds that they were actually brought in after the already completely finished gas pipeline.

“This is already a catch-up sanctions. This is a PR move to show that“ we are fighting, we are fighting. ”Although everyone understands that the result will be insignificant,” says Okhrimenko.

In his opinion, the United States took such weak measures in order not to quarrel strongly with Germany, but to create the appearance of an active struggle.

Nord Stream 2 will be launched anyway

According to Oleksandr Okhrimenko, it will no longer be possible to prevent the launch of the pipeline, and one can only postpone this moment as far as possible.

The new coalition of Germany has taken a rather soft position regarding this gas pipeline. The coalition agreement notes that Germany supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine, but decisive steps against Nord Stream 2 are not envisaged.

Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that Kiev would like to see a tougher stance on the Russian gas pipeline.

“Of course, we would like to see a clearer and more principled position on Nord Stream 2, but we understand that a coalition agreement is always a certain compromise, and we will continue to work with German partners, the new German government on Nord Stream – 2 “- said Kuleba.

However, Oleksandr Okhrimenko assures: there is no need to hope for another position of Germany, since Nord Stream 2 is economically beneficial for the German oligarchs.

“It doesn’t matter what the coalition will be, because every German chancellor serves the German oligarchs and cannot work against them. It is clear that he will lobby for their interests, but there is a nuance …” – says the analyst.

According to the expert, representatives of the German oligarchy wanted to somewhat limit Putin’s influence to Nord Stream 2, which is why they are currently interfering with the certification procedure.

“There is a chance to” throw “Putin, they can put him in such a situation that he will have to partially surrender control over the gas pipeline and ask for consent to all his actions,” the president of the Ukrainian Analytical Center said.

According to him, the Kremlin is trying to resist this, and Russia is putting pressure on Europe with gas, namely, by reducing its supply to the free market, and is scaring them by the accumulation of troops.

Okhrimenko stressed that in this situation, Putin has only one lever of pressure – this is gas, but the new German coalition also wants to win in this confrontation.
