Federbeton: ready for a green challenge but we don’t win alone

Federbeton: ready to build a sustainable future (ANSA)

(ANSA) – MILAN, 25 NOV – The cement and concrete industry is ready to play “a leading role in building a sustainable future”, with reliable, innovative and green materials: “sustainability is the key challenge and it is a challenge that does not scare us. Our entire supply chain is committed to respecting the decarbonisation commitments set by the European community “. This was underlined by the president of Federbeton, Roberto Callieri, during the meeting “Sustainable constructions: cement and concrete protagonists of the transition”, organized as part of Made Expo Milano, which also saw the participation of the Deputy Minister of Sustainable Infrastructures and Mobility , Alessandro Morelli.

To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the cement industry foresees investments for a total of 4.2 billion euros and extra operating costs of around 1.4 billion per year. “We cannot overcome this challenge alone, but a system approach is required”, starting with “support from the institutions”, explains Callieri, underlining that “these are ambitious development prospects that are unfortunately not exempt from risks. there is a real risk that the Italian industrial fabric will lose competitiveness vis-à-vis non-EU countries which have lower environmental standards, and consequently costs “. The Federation of the sector of associations of the cement and concrete supply chain asks in particular to bring forward the entry into force of the CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment) mechanism because “2026 is too late and risks seriously jeopardizing the national operational continuity” . The government should also intervene with “anti-shock” measures on expensive materials, which “put the operations of many companies at risk, which, faced with changed business conditions, could decide to stop because they are too expensive”.
