Cruises: baptism in Dubai for Msc Virtuosa

(ANSA) – GENOA, 27 NOV – Another ceremony for MSC Cruises, which today celebrates the baptism in Dubai of the new flagship MSC Virtuosa, a few days after MSC Seashore’s one in the Bahamas. Godmother of the ship (6,334 passengers, as well as 1,704 crew members and the first humanoid barman on board) was once again Sophia Loren, who christened 17 of the 19 ships in the company’s fleet. “We are honored to host this ceremony of the ancient maritime tradition in the United Arab Emirates during the year of the Golden Jubilee and, with it, to underline our long-term commitment in this region” commented Pierfrancesco Vago, executive president of MSC Cruises.

“The ship will homeport to the country as part of our deployment in the Gulf region,” he added to underline the company’s long-term commitment to the United Arab Emirates and more generally to the Middle East, a popular destination for Italian tourists. The ceremony was attended by Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, group chairman and CEO of DP World, and Helal Saeed Almarri, director general of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism. After the ceremony, MSC Virtuosa, which is also one of the most environmentally advanced cruise ships, will depart Dubai for her maiden voyage to the Gulf with visits to Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas Island and Doha.
