Italgas: agreement with Buzzi for the decarbonisation of cements

(ANSA) – MILAN, 18 JAN – Italgas and Buzzi Unicem have signed an agreement for the development of a feasibility study relating to the construction of ‘Power to Gas’ plants in combination with CO2 capture systems (carbon capture) at the production plants by Buzzi Unicem. The implementation of these technologies is aimed at favoring the decarbonisation of cement and concrete production processes with a view to greater environmental sustainability and support for the energy transition. In particular, the study will evaluate the possibility of producing and using, in the Buzzi Unicem plants deemed most suitable for the project, synthetic methane obtained from the combination of green hydrogen produced by the Power to Gas plants with part of the CO2 released in the production processes. “We strongly believe in Power to Gas technology – underlines Paolo Gallo, CEO of Italgas – and in its strategic contribution to the ecological transition from the point of view of sector coupling”. The agreement leverages the solid experience gained by Italgas in the development of a Power to Gas project in Sardinia for the production of green hydrogen with the aim of testing its uses also in urban contexts, public transport and in the supply to energy-intensive industries.
