At Christmas, spending on gifts decreases for 20% of Italians

(ANSA) – BOLOGNA, JANUARY 27 – For the Christmas holidays of 2021, the spending on gifts of over half of Italians remained in line with what was earmarked for 2020: 15% spent more, 20% less. Overall, spending on gifts dropped and 28% of Italians spent less in 2021 than in 2019, 10% spent more. This is what emerges from an analysis by Nomisma and Assofranchising.

Favorite gifts include clothing (chosen by 40%), fashion accessories (by 36%), books (by 34%), typical foods and products (by 32%), Christmas baskets (by 30%), products for the care of person (from 30%) and bottles of wine or spirits (from 28%). The average expenditure for immediate family members was 93 euros, 21 euros for friends and six euros for family members.

In terms of sales channels, the generalist platforms were chosen by five out of ten Italians, the shopping centers by 47% and the small shops in the center by three Italians.

One in ten Italians chose not to buy gifts: among these, those who prefer to save and those who want to mitigate the consumerist side of the holidays. (HANDLE).
