Channel Seven star quits live: Sunrise’s Nelson Aspen resigns after nearly 20 years

Sunrise entertainment reporter Nelson Aspen has announced he is leaving the show after nearly 20 years.

The 58-year-old shared a shocking story on Sunrise on Friday when he appeared on the Seventh Channel show via Live Cross.

“After 19 and a half years with Sunrise, I’m announcing my two-week post,” Nelson began with a surprised Natalie Barr and host Michael Asher.

Nelson said he will leave the show to focus on publishing his new book, Your Home is Your Castle.

I’m going to finish my new book… and do a book tour, a Q&A show… that includes Australian cities. Then we will say goodbye on the 15th”.

Host Natalie Barry looked upset, but told Nelson, “This isn’t goodbye.”

“Nelson, it was a wonderful walk. We will miss you, but it’s not goodbye because we have two weeks to say it.”

He concluded, “For so long.”

The veteran American journalist has appeared on Sunrise for nearly 20 years.

In 2018, to mark Nelson’s 15th birthday on the show, Nelson reflected on his time at Sunrise while performing backstage.

He said he was grateful to “have the opportunity to interview so many stars”.

“I just had the experience of a member of the Sunrise family coming to Australia and meeting you and the fans… these are extraordinary opportunities,” added Nelson.

She was recently awarded International Media Journalist of the Year by Jennifer Aniston in 2020 by the Journalists Guild of America.

Throughout his career, Nelson has interviewed the likes of Julie Andrews, Harrison Ford, Rose Byrne and helped cover events including the Oscar for Sunrise.

She was recently named Jennifer Aniston's 2020 International Media Journalist of the Year by the American Journalists Guild.
