In an expert survey by the magazine “Opernwelt”, the Frankfurt Opera was once again voted “Opera House of the Year”, the title for the sixth time. The reason for this sixth award was an innovative, courageous program planning and outstanding directorial achievements, it was said on Thursday. According to its own statements, the magazine interviewed more than 40 international critics for the survey.
The “Performance of the Year” in the 2021/22 season was also seen in Frankfurt with Christof Loy’s production of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Night Before Christmas”. The house also houses the “Choir of the Year” for the performance of the singers in Luigi Dallapiccola’s music theater “Ulisse”.
“Conductor of the Year” is Kirill Petrenko. The head of the Berlin Philharmonic was honored for his interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s “Pique Dame”, which he presented with the orchestra from Berlin in Baden-Baden. For the critics, Kirill Serebrennikov is the “Director of the Year” because of his interpretations of Shostakovich’s “Nase” at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and Weber’s “Freischütz” in Amsterdam.
Peter Eötvös’ “Sleepless” at the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden and Stefan Wirth’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring” at the Zurich Opera House were rated equal as the “World Premiere of the Year”. (dpa)
