“Extraordinarily creative personality”: Aviel Cahn is the new artistic director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin

Aviel Cahn will be the new director of the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. The 48-year-old, who was born in Switzerland, is to succeed Dietmar Schwarz on August 1, 2026. His contract ends in the summer of 2025, as the Senate Culture Administration announced on Monday in Berlin.
Culture Senator Klaus Lederer (left) described Cahn as “an extraordinarily creative personality”. He is pleased that the Foundation Council of the Berlin Opera Foundation has followed the recommendation of the advisory committee he has appointed. Lederer had previously assumed that a new director could be in place by mid-2023. Now it’s faster.
Cahn, who holds a doctorate in law and is a trained singer, is currently the general director of the Geneva Opera. Since 2004, the Berlin Opera Foundation has united the three Berlin opera houses – Deutsche Oper Berlin, Komische Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Unter den Linden – as well as the Berlin State Ballet and the Berlin Stage Service as independent operations under one roof.
