The Last of Us: What’s the difference between Joel and Marlene’s lie to Ellie?

I think there is some confusion about this. I know Marlene doesn’t explicitly give this information to Ellie because she didn’t want to alarm her but I think that they have a more pragmatic relationship. She may even have hinted at it, which gives Ellie even greater conflict that she didn’t have the freedom that Joel took away from her.

Finally, black on white, yes. Marlene and Joel take away Ellie’s free will. But I think Marlene gave him more information, she didn’t explicitly lie to him. She may have forgotten some truths.

Moreover, the relationship between Marlene and Joel is steeped in history. As Marlene says, they are both capable of so much. They followed parallel paths. But there’s a chasm and animosity between them […] So there’s this element that Joel doesn’t care at all what Marlene wants in this situation, even though she’s throwing arguments at him trying to negotiate with him.
