Science + Fiction awards Abel Ferrara for career

(ANSA) – TRIESTE, 01 NOV – Fantastic jewels, as the organizers defined those “small but memorable fantastic, mannerist and decadent films”, such as “Body Snatchers” (“Ultracorpi – The invasion continues”. 1993), remake Don Siegel’s classic, vampire metropolitan horror “The Addiction” (1996), “New Rose Hotel” (1998), based on William Gibson’s novel, and the more recent “4:44 Last Day on Earth” (2011). Works that, according to the organizers, place Abel Ferrara “among the directors of late science fiction”. Precisely for these fantastic jewels Ferrara – a cult American director (but of Italian-Irish origins and Roman by adoption) – will tonight be awarded the Asteroide Lifetime Achievement Award as part of the 21 / o Trieste Science + Fiction Festival, the review scheduled until to 3 November with live and online screenings on the MYmovies SciFiClub platform.

The evening will be dedicated to Abel Ferrara: at the Rossetti Theater, after the award ceremony of the Trieste festival, preceded by the awarding of the prize, his new political-apocalyptic noir, “Zeros and Ones”, with Ethan Hawke, best director all last Locarno Film Festival. Written during the first phase of the pandemic, the film follows J. Jericho, an American soldier in an apocalyptic siege Rome, in lockdown due to an epidemic and a war. The Vatican has been hit by explosions and the protagonist will have to fight against an unknown enemy that threatens the world, including Chinese, KGB and Mossad agents.

Born (and raised) in the South Bronx in 1951, Ferrara is one of the modern independent filmmakers most loved by French critics and is considered the director who in the early 90s was between Scorsese and Tarantino. Not surprisingly – after his debut in the late 1970s when he directed The Driller Killer (1979) and The Angel of Revenge (1981) – his international fame is due to the two gangster movies “King of New York” (1990) and “The Bad Lieutenant” (1992).
