Netflix series “The Night Agent”: High voltage when you call

In a small room in the basement of the White House is an emergency phone that members of a secret counterintelligence program can use to contact the President of the United States at any time. Young FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) works the night shift. Actually not an exciting job.

But there is more to it than a human answering machine. He proved that when he saved numerous lives in a bomb attack on the Washington subway and even almost caught the assassin. Only one phone call will be needed to make him a real agent.

The ten-part Netflix series “The Night Agent” (starting Thursday) is based on the novel of the same name by Matthew Quirk. Showrunner Shawn Ryan (SWAT) brought on board Ryan Corey Deshon and Seth Fischer to write the screenplay and Seth Gordon and Millicent Shelton to direct.

The result is an action-packed and suspense-packed spy thriller in which an emergency for the national security of the USA emerges through many twists and turns. A touch of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” and “The Recruit” wafts through the streaming catalogue, because this “Night Agent” can definitely compete with the genre role models.

It all starts with a phone call from a terrified Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan). Her aunt and uncle were murdered. All they could tell her was the number of the emergency phone. Peter brings Rose to safety over the phone and becomes her body guard from then on.

Rose only knows this much: Shortly before her death, her relatives spoke of a conspiracy in the White House, something was supposed to happen in five days, she had heard. And that you can’t trust anyone anymore. Peter and Rose should quickly find out how serious the situation is. Not only because the killer couple Dale (Phoenix Raei) and Ellen (Eve Harlow) – who are described in exceptional detail – are hot on their heels.

Meanwhile, Peter Sutherland is still struggling with conflicts of loyalty. Who is he more committed to: Chief of Staff Diane Farr (Hong Chau), who got him the job, or FBI Deputy Director Hawkins (Robert Patrick), who has little faith in the rookie? And what role does the Secret Service play, which is also responsible for protecting Vice President Redfield (Christopher Shyer) and his daughter Maddie (Sarah Desjardins). With almost every episode new storylines and characters are added until the picture slowly begins to clarify.
