The Film Academy announced the nominations for the German Film Prize on Friday at the Berlin Kino International. With twelve nominations, the big favorite is Edward Berger’s anti-war film “Nothing New in the West”, which has already won four Oscars.
Six productions are in the running for the Golden Lola for Best Film. In addition to “Nothing New in the West”, Fatih Akin’s box office-successful rapper biography “Rheingold” and Ali Abbasis’ thriller Holy Spider, which tells of a serial murder of prostitutes in Iran.
Three other films celebrated their premiere at the Berlinale: Ilker Çatak’s drama “The Teacher’s Room” with Leonie Benesch, who was nominated for the leading role, the tragic comedy “When will it finally be like it never was” by Sonja Heiss based on the novel by Joachim Meyerhoff and David Wnendt’s Neukölln drama “Sonne und Beton” based on the novel by Felix Lobrecht. Christian Petzold’s film “Red Sky”, which was awarded a Silver Bear, did not even make it onto the film award long list. The film award is endowed with three million euros.
The awards are scheduled to be presented at a gala on May 12. It is already certain that the director, author and producer Volker Schlöndorff will receive an honorary award for outstanding services to German film. (tsp)
