CDU and SPD in post poker: Who follows Berlin’s Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer?

If the CDU is allowed to nominate the culture senator in the next Berlin government, then Joe Chialo will get the position. Kai Wegner made a decision on this point even before he won the election.

However, should culture fall to the SPD in the poker game – because the CDU then finds other departments more important – who will then move into the administration in Brunnenstraße? Franziska Giffey did not appoint a shadow senator beforehand – and, to be honest, no one from the ranks of the leading Social Democrats really pushed for the job.

Expertise is crucial

Melanie Kühnemann-Grunow, as cultural policy spokeswoman for the SPD parliamentary group, represented her party in the coalition working group on the subject of culture. When asked by the Tagesspiegel, she simply explained: “There are currently no questions about the division of departments and appointments, but will be answered at the very end of the negotiations.” Then she added in an e-mail postscript: “The night of the long knives is still ahead of us . Until then, we all have to be patient.”

So it remains exciting.

Should CDU man Joe Chialo win the race, the pop music manager would be well advised to get someone on his side as State Secretary:in who has a real standing in so-called high culture. Because important decisions in this area are still pending in this legislative period. I’m just saying: the successor to Daniel Barenboim at the Lindenoper.

It takes knowledge of the scene, a sure instinct and, above all, a strategic vision for the future of Germany’s capital of classical music. Because the general music direction will also be vacant at the Deutsche Oper in the medium term.

So it’s about the artistic realignment of the entire Berlin Opera Foundation. Cultural policy must decide how the three houses should relate to each other in terms of content. This requires more than courage – namely real professional competence.
