Contact, a bridge between great photographers and promising young people

(by Luciano Fioramonti) (ANSA) – ROME, NOV 03 – The black and white of the closed door of a New York subway car in the seventies, expressionless travelers tight in their coats; the same color scene seen today in Rome, with the door open framing a young black girl in a tank top and red shorts, the Nike lettering in plain sight and sneakers. Two current events compared with a time lag of half a century, the hand of a master of shooting like Caio Mario Garrubba (1923-2015) and the ‘answer’ of Jacopo Brucculeri, a young promise of 31 years. It is one of the most effective images of the ‘game’ proposed by the Historical Archive of the Istituto Luce for ten boys and girls under 35 selected for a masterclass who were asked to deal with the work of five great names in photography. The result of the challenge is described in the WeGill headquarters by the exhibition ” Contatto 2021 ”, promoted until November 28 in collaboration with Cinecittà and TWM Factory, which presents ten images of each of the great Italian authors – in addition to Garrubba, Adolfo Porry- Pastorel (1888-1960), Pino Settanni (1949-2010), and the successful contemporaries Maurizio Fraschetti and Vittorio Daniele. Among these, the young participants in the three-day full immersion chose one to reinterpret it following their personal taste and sensitivity. The sixty images chosen by Maria Gabriella Macchiarulo and Riccardo Ferranti are the result of a jam session of contemporary photography – the promoters said -, a way to bring new talents into the archive, and to update the legacy left by the giants. ” We wanted to create a bridge and literally bring together a wealth of professionalism and experience, with new energies, techniques and trends. The result is an enlightening group slide, which brings together the history of photography and photojournalism of the 1900s, and a look at what moves in today’s Italian lens ”.

“This initiative is the first, small sign of the great commitment that the new management of Cinecittà intends to put in place for the new generations – said the president of Cinecittà and the Luce historical archive, Chiara Sbarigia – The one guarded by Cinecittà and the Archivio Luce is a wealth of experiences, creativity and history that can represent a formidable source of inspiration for today’s artists. We intend to offer them the opportunity to treasure the past to make their future artistically richer. ” ten ‘diptychs’ that unite a master of yesterday and today with a young talent build the ‘dialogue’ between photographs that are sometimes decades apart, between generations, techniques and technologies, gazes, movements, trends, provocations, sensibilities. from the images of early photojournalism, from the 1920s to the 1940s by Porry-Pastorel, unanimously considered the father of the genre; the shots of a reportage giant like C aio Garrubba (currently on display at Palazzo Merulana with an event that takes stock of his international stature), from the 1950s to the 1970s; the photos of a genius of cinema and travel portraiture like Pino Settanni. The fascinating street frescoes by two contemporaries, Maurizio Fraschetti, a tireless traveler of Italian social realities, and Vittorio Daniele, author of important reports on historical-political events in different areas of the planet. In ‘contact’ with them, the young people who analyzed, studied and reread them: Carola Blondelli, Jacopo Brucculeri, Andrea Ciccarese, Giordana Citti, Giulia De Gregori, Chiara Masia, Flavia Mazzoni, Matteo Piacenti, Paolo Pirani Fasoli, Alex Tabellini, engaged in the masterclass of the Archivio Storico Luce (which only has a treasure of 3 million pieces of photographs), in the Conservation, Restoration and Digitization Laboratories and in the places where cinematographic film is preserved and curated (over 70,000 films from the 1920s to today) where it is also scanned and reconverted to digital.
