Worst Marvel movie ever? Review of the movie The Eternals

I recently talked about what The Eternals was about and mentioned that Western critics thought the film was too long. Frankly, I was sure that they were exaggerating, although on the Rotten Tomatoes website the picture was rated at 50 points, which is not the best result.

After watching, I wonder if Marvel did the right thing by inviting Chloe Zhao as a director? Undoubtedly, she deserved her “Oscar” for “Land of the Nomads”, but is such a format really necessary in the new phase of MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe)?

Long storytelling

Marvel fans are accustomed to a fairly long timing, but in the same “Avengers. Endgame” two hours pass as 15 minutes, because the events are dynamic and exciting. In “The Eternals”, which runs for more than two and a half hours, even the action scenes seem to be somewhat slow-motion.

It is very interesting to observe what is happening with the heroine of Angelina Jolie – Tena, but Richard Madden (hello to fans of “Game of Thrones”) seems to “graze the back” from the very beginning and does not show himself too actively, although he is just connected with his Ikaris The main raft is a twist of the film.

Separately, I would like to highlight the Irish actor Barry Keoghan, he played Druig, who opposed other members of his race. The nature of his character attracts attention, and in general Druig seems to be the most independent of the Eternals.

The premise of the film

“The Eternals” is a long and unhurried film that gradually introduces the viewer to the many new characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which we will now see in the upcoming films.

The character of Keith Harington, by the way, was not revealed at all, although even before the start of filming it was announced that the actor would play the Black Knight (this is an independent character that does not belong to the Eternals).

The main idea of ​​the film, in my opinion, is not that humanity is once again on the verge of death due to more developed and enlightened creatures, but that even superhumans, which are the Eternals, are weak in the face of the problem of choice, the problem of pity, regret, empathy, duty … These godlike heroes feel the same as ordinary people and, just like ordinary people, do not know what to do with all this, they also make mistakes and feel pain.

In almost every Marvel film, directors emphasize the main line – belief in the best. There is always a hero (or several) who fights, even if there is no sense in it. Is it really not?

As a Marvel fan, did I like The Eternals? Not sure. I can only see it as an “introduction” to a new phase of the MCU – a new chapter. It is categorically impossible to compare The Eternals with The Avengers, but giving yourself time to understand this movie is worth it.

PS Post-credits scene

In one of the scenes after the credits, if you sit “Eternals” to the end, Marvel showed British singer Harry Styles – he got the role of Eros aka Star Fox aka brother of Thanos, who ruined everything in the last “Avengers”.

I’d love to see Eros in future films! In the meantime, the series “Hawkeye” and the movie “Spider-Man: No Way Home” are next in line, which are due out before the end of this year.
