Daniel Barenboim and the Berlin State Opera: Culture Senator Joe Chialo wants an “excellent successor”

“Berlin’s culture must claim to be and remain excellent,” said the CDU politician and new Berlin Senator for Culture, Joe Chialo, on Monday during the meeting of the Culture Committee of the House of Representatives. As an example, he cited the vacancy in the general music direction at the Berlin State Opera.

“For example, the appointment of Daniel Barenboim’s successor must be excellent,” stressed Chialo. The 80-year-old maestro, who had been General Music Director of the Lindenoper since 1992, gave up his post at the beginning of the year for health reasons. A successor is currently being sought. The culture senator is responsible for this.

Chialo named the reform of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation as another important topic. “Even if the federal government and all 16 federal states are in the lead together, as the seat of the federal state, Berlin has a special responsibility and will play a key role in setting the course that will contribute to making the foundation more attractive to the public,” says Chialo. dpa/Tsp
