After allegations by students: Maria Happel resigns as head of the Reinhardt seminar

The German actress Maria Happel (60) has given up the management of the Vienna Max Reinhardt Seminar after criticism of the conditions in the renowned acting school. “Since my work, which is committed to artistic aspects, is no longer desired,” she resigns with immediate effect, said Happel, who is known from the television series “SOKO Vienna” and from the Vienna Burgtheater.

At the end of May, the Viennese newspaper “Der Standard” published an open letter from students of the Reinhardt seminar, in which an alleged system of “abuse of power, nepotism and ignorance” at the state training center was denounced. Among other things, the management did not deal with the processing of harassment and abuse of power at the institute, it said.

In addition, Happel is rarely present. Happel then rejected this accusation in an interview with the APA news agency, but admitted that as a busy artist she was not there for the students as often as she would like. The Reinhardt Seminar is part of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Among others, OW Fischer, Christiane Hörbiger, Ute Lemper, Birgit Minichmayr and Christoph Waltz were trained there. (dpa)
