(ANSA) – LECCE, 09 NOV – “I belong to a generation whose mother’s milk was Italian cinema. After mother’s milk there is the first glass of water which is French cinema”: he spoke of himself, of his work and his career the Hungarian director Istvan Szabó, guest of the European Film Festival in Lecce who awarded him the Golden Olive Tree for Lifetime Achievement. Szabó was the first Hungarian director to win the Oscar for best foreign film, in 1982, with Mephisto. In the hall, in Lecce, he presents ‘Final Report’, his latest work, as a national preview.
“I don’t want to see cell phones anymore, I don’t want to see people watching films on smartphones – said Szabó, answering journalists’ questions – how is it possible to see a work by Michelangelo on a small postage stamp?”. The director also added that he has not seen an Italian film for over ten years: “I’m sorry to have to add this second part – he specified – it’s very sad”. (HANDLE).
