Art: in piazza Catania Alba sculpture from the times of Vascellari

(ANSA) – CATANIA, 19 NOV – From today piazza Europa in Catania hosts the sculpture “Alba dei Tempi” by Nico Vascellari, donated to the city as part of the Bat Italia “Art & more by gloTm” project. “An extraordinary work – said the mayor Salvo Pogliese – created by an author of international standing who enriches the city’s artistic heritage by focusing on the theme of environmental protection, towards which our south is also showing a growing sensitivity”.

In addition to the artist, Brigitte Maria Santner, country manager of Bat Italia, and Cristiano Seganfreddo, editor of Flash Art were also present “We are happy to reiterate our closeness to this splendid city – said Brigitte Maria Santner – in to which in the past we have donated five large colored elephants, signed by the artist Ligama. We thank the Municipality for having allowed the realization of this new initiative that reflects our values through a disruptive creative process, in which past and present coexist ‘without compromise’ “.

With “Dawn of the Times” Vascellari brings to Catania a monumental installation that sees rock painting, the most ancient form of art, as its protagonist. Inspired by the graffiti of a dolphin-whale found in the cave of the Genovese on the Egadi Islands between 10,000 and 6,000 BC, the artist worked on the creation of a work through ground casting, one of the most ancient techniques for producing metal sculptures. The aluminum is poured into a mold composed of red earth, broken at the end of the process to be able to extract the piece.

“During the first lockdown in 2020 – explained Vascellari – I often thought it would never end.

I imagined having to remain closed in the house forever, sheltered from the outside world almost as if I lived barricaded in a cave and in doing this I was devising new working methods. One of the first was to produce small sculptures using water, salt and flour, reproducing primitive rock paintings, imagining that one day they could become huge in an attempt to reduce mankind compared to nature “.
