Riva-De Andrè, Buffa’s Fragile Friends at the theater

Faber, the songwriter of the marginalized, rebels and prostitutes, the poet of Genoa and its sea. On the other hand, the legendary number 11 of Cagliari (after him no one ever wore his shirt). Or, as Gianni Brera renamed him, Rombo di tuono, the European champion in 1968 and vice world champion with the Azzurri in Mexico 1970. They are Fabrizio De André and Gigi Riva, together for the first time in the theater. Or the “Fragile Friends”, as the title of the new show by Federico Buffa, the leading face of Sky who “dared” to bring football to the theater and make it an epic, ready to debut in the national premiere from 1 to December 5 at the Massimo in Cagliari (preview on November 30 at the Verdi in Sassari), and then set off on tour until April (with stops also in Turin, Bologna, Genoa, Milan, Padua, Brescia). Directed by Marco Caronna, who returns to the stage together with Buffa also as a musician (guitars, voices, percussions) together with Alessandro Nidi (piano, keyboards), “Fragile friends” is the story of an encounter between two lonely and very deep souls . It is September 14, 1969 after a match in Genoa of a Cagliari that that year would have won the only, historic Scudetto. Gigi Riva visits Fabrizio de André. It looks like a meeting between two very distant worlds. Instead, in the silence that characterizes the first part of the evening, the thoughts of two strays flow who, in different fields and ways, have always chosen to be on the side of the other strays. And who have many points of contact, starting with the love for Sardinia. Riva, born on the shores of Lake Maggiore, arrives there, very young and at the very beginning of his career, sold to Cagliari by Legnano at the age of 19. He disembarks reluctantly, but instead here he will choose to live his entire career, even refusing dizzying engagements from the most famous teams in the North. “As a boy I did not have the satisfactions, neither me nor my family – you can hear from his voice in a recording of the time in the show – I saw how they were and they were not well. Now that instead I could give them the satisfactions me, there is no one anymore “. De Andrè, on the other hand, already moved to the island as a man, with Dori Ghezzi, the dream of becoming a breeder and a child on the way. “Fabrizio was able to bite Genoa up to the age of 34 – says Buffa on stage – Then he too thought that the island was the most suitable dimension for his restless soul. I play by the unwritten rules, you are writing the history of both “. To unite the two are also the people of Sardinia, the sea, the colors, red and blue, one from Cagliari, the other from Genoa, the public that follows them religiously, football, music, songs. One in particular, that “Prayer in January” that Fabrizio writes returning from the funeral of his friend Luigi Tenco. A song that struck a thunderclap in the depths. He listens to it obsessively and wants to talk about it with whoever wrote that prayer. And the night becomes dawn. Enter Fabrizio’s maître à penser, Georges Brassens, who also inspired a certain propensity for anarchy of the strongest striker in the history of our football. Words and words of songs flow, galloping towards a left that swells the net or an incident that enters the soul. When words become too many Fabrizio gives Gigi his guitar, Gigi gives Fabrizio his number 11 jersey. The two say goodbye, they will never see each other again.
