Herculaneum, the last fugitive’s purse and its ‘treasure’

(ANSA) – NAPLES, 01 DEC – The skeleton of the last fugitive recently found in an excavation campaign on the Ancient Beach of Herculaneum had a shoulder bag containing different types of materials, objects of common use connected to each other, which will be carefully studied in the laboratory to then undergo restoration. This is what emerged this morning in a meeting with the press at the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum which was also attended by Giovanni Di Blasio, general director of the Great Pompeii Project, archaeologists of the Herculaneum Conservation project, restorers. The discovery in the supine position of the fugitive, a man of about 40-45 years, who left the group of about three hundred Herculaneers found in the arches, or a soldier of Pliny who came to help the inhabitants of the ancient city in the eruption of 79 AD, made it possible to implement a transdisciplinary study; the objects of the victim, with the body affected by numerous fractures and close to his skeleton, allow archaeologists, anthropologists and restorers to work in synergy to arrive at a correct reading and interpretation of the discovery. Of particular interest is a wooden box, a sort of shoulder bag.

In addition to the wood of the box, the archaeologists also found pieces of cloth, traces of gold finishing of considerable historical interest but of complex removal: for this reason, it was explained in an on-site inspection, we will proceed with a detachment of the bread of ground below to continue in the laboratory to recover and examine the box; then, a phase of investigation of what is contained and cleaning will follow, which will eventually lead to a restoration intervention. And that’s not all. On the Ancient Beach, in addition to the skeleton of the fugitive, wooden finds were found such as shrubs, roots of tall trees, large beams, panels probably belonging to false ceilings and roofs of the buildings; material on which the restorers of the multidisciplinary group are working to better define it also in anticipation of new restoration interventions.
