(ANSA) – BOLOGNA, 03 DEC – An exhibition itinerary to deepen the relationship between Antonio Canova (1757-1822) and Bologna, its institutions and its artists, also highlighting the role of the sculptor in the history of the Pinacoteca collection: a a few months after the resumption of activities for the public, the Pinacoteca Nazionale presents the exhibition ‘Antonio Canova e Bologna from 4th December to 20th February.

At the origins of the Pinacoteca ‘, curated by Alessio Costarelli. The master of Italian Neoclassicism contributed to diplomatic operations of great importance for the artistic heritage of the city, recovering it largely from France, where it had been accumulated after the Napoleonic spoliation. Paintings, sculptures, manuscripts and documents from various museum institutions, libraries and archives will accompany the works of the museum, whose permanent path will be an integral part of the project.

The exhibition in the Salone degli Incamminati, an opportunity to recall the origins of the largest public collection of Bolognese art, is part of a pilot project in a program of initiatives with which the Pinacoteca intends to renew its presence in the cultural fabric of the city, making explicit the link between the heritage of the museum and the history of the area. In the scientific project of the exhibition – accompanied by a catalog published by Electa – three main research objects converge: Antonio Canova’s visits to the city, the relations he maintained with the city institutions and the diplomatic activity, following which the sculptor succeeded to obtain the return from Paris in 1815 of most of the masterpieces requisitioned by Napoleon’s commissioners, today the substantial nucleus of the Pinacoteca collection. The exhibition itinerary will end with the re-enactment of the exhibition which took place in the Church of the Holy Spirit starting from January 1816 and which was set up with 18 of the returned masterpieces. The event represented not only the return of the removed artistic assets, but also the first major exhibition of ancient art organized in Bologna by local institutions. (HANDLE).
