Exhibitions: ‘Dante al Palazzo Reale’ opens in Naples

(ANSA) – NAPLES, 03 DEC – The Royal Palace of Naples celebrates Dante Alighieri with an exhibition centered on three canvases depicting episodes of the Divine Comedy, performed by the painter Tommaso De Vivo, set up in the spaces of the “Galleria del Genovese” (up to 1 March 2022) curated by Mario Epifani and Andrea Mazzucchi.

The paintings, made for Vittorio Emanuele II, in view of the sixth centenary of the birth of the Supreme Poet (1865), were subsequently divided between the Royal Palace, the National Library and the Royal Palace of Caserta. In the year of Dante 700, the restored cycle of de Vivo is brought together in its original location in comparison with other testimonies of Dante’s fortune in Neapolitan art around the mid-nineteenth century. From the famous painting by Domenico Morelli depicting Dante and Virgil in Purgatory (1844), to the lithograph album by Antonio Manganaro which illustrates in a satirical tone The Maritime Exhibition visited by Dante and Virgil (1871). The visit itinerary, set up by the architect Lucianna Iovieno, is enriched by multimedia projections, created by Stefano Gargiulo (Kaos Produzioni) which illustrate Dante’s journey into the afterlife through images taken from illuminated manuscripts.

“This exhibition inaugurates the exhibition activity of the new autonomous museum of the Royal Palace of Naples in specially set up rooms near the Historic Apartment – announces the director Epifani – With this focus on the collections in the period of the Kingdom of Italy, the work of preliminary investigation into a revision of the layout of the Apartment, based on historical inventories. ” In an exhibition space open to the public for the first time, the exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Department of Humanities of the University of Naples “Federico II”, the National Library of Naples, the State Archives and the Royal Palace of Caserta. The catalog, published by Editori Paparo, inaugurates the new series of “Quaderni di Palazzo Reale”, dedicated to the study of specific themes linked to the history of the Palazzo and its collections.
