Art: in Rio a video and sound installation by Tomaso De Luca

(ANSA) – RIO DE JANEIRO, 03 DEC – With the patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums (Amaci), the video and sound installation will be exhibited in Rio de Janeiro on 11 December ‘ A Weekïs Notice ‘by artist Tomaso De Luca, winner of the MAXXI Bulgari Prize 2020.

The event takes place as part of the 17th edition of the Contemporary Day and is a realization of the Italian Cultural Institute of Rio de Janeiro together with the MAXXI Foundation – National Museum of 21st Century Arts and the Cinemateca of the Museum of Modern Art ( Mam) of Rio.

The artist’s work, in continuous reference between drawing, sculpture, installation and video, brings to light submerged places of the collective imagination: exceptions to the rule, understood as vital survival strategies.

A Week’s Notice, a video and sound installation on three channels proposed here in the single-channel version, transforms domestic architecture into a disorienting space, where the sense of loss and precariousness become generative elements of a reconstruction.

The work starts from the need to create an ‘alternative ending’ to the ruthless phenomenon of AIDS gentrification: while the homosexual community, which between the 80s and 90s was the most affected by the epidemic, disappeared, the market saw in that massacre an opportunity: furniture and personal belongings were thrown into the street and the apartments put back on the market for healthier and more affluent tenants.

In an attempt to recapture this lost space, De Luca presents an ode to the decay of architecture, made up of miniatures that fly, collapse and go mad, seeking beauty in instability and making trauma a territory of creation. (HANDLE).
