Books: Yehoshua, Italy my second home

(ANSA) – ROME, DECEMBER 06 – The Italian Cultural Institute of Tel Aviv hosts a meeting on December 8, “Italy is my second home”, with the Israeli writer Abraham B. Yehoshua on the occasion of the publication in Italy of his latest novel “The only daughter”. The book is set in Italy, a country with which the writer has a special relationship, so much so that he defines himself as an “honorary citizen”. The work, released in Israel in the spring, was recently published in Italy by Einaudi in a version modified by the author himself, with a translation by Alessandra Shomroni.

Identity and family, culture and tradition are at the center of the story starring Rachele Luzzato, a twelve-year-old girl, curious and intelligent, the only daughter of a wealthy Jewish family, who lives halfway between two cultures: the Catholic one of the mother and the Jewish one of the father. Rachele attends middle school in a city in Northern Italy and on the occasion of the Christmas holidays she is chosen to play Maria in the school play. From here, a journey will begin to discover its roots and its identity. Yehoshua said that his bond with Italy stems from the meeting with Edmondo De Amicis and the reading of the book “Cuore”, which made him understand that he wanted to become a writer. The Ambassador of Italy to Israel Sergio Barbanti will also participate in the meeting with Abraham B. Yehoshua. The event will be broadcast live on the Institute’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
