From San Giovanni al Santo Spirito, in Rome new life for historic hospitals

(ANSA) – ROME, DEC 10 – From the “second Sistine Chapel” of Santo Spirito in Sassia to the Domus dei Valeri, found in San Giovanni dell’Addolorata between 2004 and 2007, with its corridor from the II AD. , as is normal, they appeared to us only as places of care, where we hoped to enter only strictly necessary, today historic hospitals conquer new life, guardians of infinite stories and (sometimes) unsuspected cultural and artistic beauties, right in the heart Some cities. Wonders that now, at least in Lazio, will return to accessible to the public thanks to the agreement signed by the Minister of Culture, Dario Franceschini, and by the President of the Lazio Region, Nicola Zingaretti. At the center, the enhancement and use, in fact, of the cultural assets of the hospitals of significant historical, artistic and monumental interest in the area. “A widespread heritage that goes from ancient times to the 700-800 – says the Special Superintendent of Rome, Daniela Porro – who often lives alongside” the normal activity of hospitals. The agreement concerns, in particular, the Santo Spirito in Sassia hospital complex, one of the oldest in Europe, founded in 727 by Ine, king of Wessex of the Saxon dynasty, to which many centuries later Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere gave a Corsia Sistina: 120 meters long by 12 wide, which make it the largest frescoed room in Rome, just restored by the Superintendency just like Andrea Palladio’s Ciborium. But there is also the San Giovanni Addolorata hospital, which in the complex of its buildings tells a journey through time between the Domus dei Valeri, the horti of Domizia Lucilla, mother of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, up to the frescoed women’s hospital in the Baroque age. And again, the San Gallicano health center headed by the IFO, founded in 1725 at the behest of Pope Benedict XIII and designed by the architect Filippo Raguzzini. Thanks to the agreement, it will be possible to improve the conservation of hospitals and related areas, also through study, prevention, maintenance, restoration and recovery interventions and with the possibility of experimenting with new models of use, also involving other public and private subjects. There is also the possibility of organizing cultural events and the improvement of visiting itineraries, the creation or adaptation of rooms for the museum exhibition and the offer of additional services, as well as the implementation of telematic services and training programs for students. “Today we are inaugurating a new road – comments Minister Franceschini – For a long time in our country there has been talk of urban regeneration, the fight against land consumption and the redevelopment of historic centers: speeches which are not always followed by concrete initiatives. In this case we have carried out an important and innovative choice, which will show the way to many other regions, municipalities and structures “. “Among the beauties of this country of ours there is also healthcare which is often located in wonderful places – adds Zingaretti – We have hospitals that are the history of Rome but also of Viterbo, of Tivoli, of many municipalities”. Having left the commissioner and with the arrival of funds from the NRP, “today we are investing and building new hospitals – he adds – Finally, with the Ministry we also have a protocol to enhance, reopen and give citizens back to these wonderful places. We have already started, for example. , in Viterbo with the hospital in the center of the country which will now become a great cultural lung in the north of Lazio. But also with the Lancisiana Library and the Santo Spirito in Sassia. It can only be done in Italy, because this heritage exists only here and we must be proud of it “.
