(ANSA) – ROME, DEC 21 – The “Giovanni Verga 2022 Official Event” was presented today, dedicated to the centenary of the writer, considered the most authoritative exponent of Verism.
The initiative, produced by Dreamworld Pictures and Verghiano Festival and under the Artistic Direction of the director Lorenzo Muscoso, originally from Vizzini – like the author -, will bring the Verga universe into vogue through a series of activities articulated between theatrical and musical performances, film reviews, itineraries with FAI, cultural meetings that will take place throughout 2022 and that will continue into 2023.
The culmination of the celebrations will be the awarding of the Verga Prize to Maestro Plácido Domingo, extraordinary interpreter of Turiddu in Franco Zeffirelli’s film-opera “Cavalleria rusticana”, which reaches exactly 40 years after the famous transposition. Event that also announces important news and under the direction of Muscoso: on the theatrical front, there will be the play centered on the figure of the writer and on his experience in his native country; for the musical field there will be staged the Opera of the Cavalleria Rusticana in various places, and finally, for cinema and TV, the production of the Remake of the Duello Rusticano and the biography of the Novelist. A cultural network has also been established that brings together Italian and European cities, institutions and universities, from Sicily, with cities from Palermo, Vizzini, Catania, Ragusa to the rest of Italy, with centers such as Irsina, Montalbano Jonico, Matera, Rome, and Milan . Also present is Paris, which belongs to Giovanni Verga’s past both in ties with Emile Zola and as the place of his theatrical debut outside the national borders, and in addition, the two cities of culture, Procida 2022 and Timisoara 2023. Collaborations also with Vigevano in the tribute to the talent of Eleonora Duse, the first historic actress of the rustic drama, and with the intervention of the Mascagni Committee, a symbolic reunion between the Sicilian author and the Maestro from Livorno.
