The actors of Pratello at the Arena del Sole in Bologna

(ANSA) – BOLOGNA, 03 JAN – Eight young people in charge of the Juvenile Justice Services, coming from educational communities of the regional territory and from the Pirrone Penal Institute of Bologna together with three very young actresses are the protagonists of Paolo Billi’s show, ‘ Memories of hands’ in the usual appointment that the Arena del Sole Theater in Bologna dedicates to the Compagnia del Pratello.

Third and last work of the Fathers and Sons trilogy (after Heretical Heirs of 2019 and The footsteps of children in 2020), ‘Memories of hands’ from 4 to 9 January will place ‘the hand’ at the center of the relationship between parent and children: his knowledge, its powers, its evocative abilities. A first study was presented in September at the Juvenile Penitentiary of Bologna, with a company made up of children from the IMP. This definitive edition sees a company of boys from the External Criminal Area on stage, with the exception of a boy from the Institute, the protagonist of the show, who has obtained permission to participate in two months of outdoor rehearsals.

The text was written by Paolo Billi and the rapper Sulemani, who ten years ago attended the workshops and participated in a show inside the Ipm in Bologna.

Three years ago, the two met again in an adult prison and, in 2021, through a long correspondence, they wrote some scenes of the show, reworking literary ideas on rap rhythms. Memorie di mani is a divertissement in five movements, starting with The Girl Without Hands, a Grimm’s tale in which a father, to save himself from the devil, cuts off his daughter’s hands. The brother will make a journey into the ancient habit of man to amputate his hands and the consequent value of “giving his hand”. The protagonist meets a strange traveling show company, which, on a real ring, offers entertainment, in which the “cut hands”, taken from the pages of Basile, Maupassant and Nerval, whirl in a whirlwind.
