(ANSA) – PADUA, 04 JAN – The equestrian statue of Donatello’s Gattamelata, located in the square in front of the sacred building, will be replaced by a copy and transferred to the Museum of the Basilica of Sant’Antonio in Padua. The announcement was made by the Pontifical Delegate to the Saint, Msgr. Fabio Dal Cin.
The cost of the operation, which also includes the restoration of the original, damaged by bad weather and pigeon droppings, amounts to approximately 2 million euros.
The appeal for the salvation of the monument, created by the Florentine sculptor between 1446 and 1453, was launched in recent days by Italia Nostra. “The museum building – wrote Msgr. Dal Cin – which will naturally remain within the Antonian complex itself, will have the double advantage of permanently saving the work, otherwise destined for inevitable deterioration, and making it even more appreciated by citizens and visitors thanks to specially created enhancement paths “.
