Fashion trends of the past are returning, to which we have long been accustomed. But some of them raised questions both then and continue to do so in 2022.

One of the most popular and even scandalous trends of the 90s, thongs peeking out from under clothes, is back again. Now, thanks to the Internet, it’s called “whale tail” and even created the #whaletail hashtag.

Many consider this way of expressing in clothes nothing more than a provocation, while others are more aggressive and call the trend bad taste and complete bad taste. The trend in TikTok has been actively criticized.

It gained its greatest popularity in the 1990s and early 2000s. Pop icons of their time Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, often showed off underwear in their stage looks. A Gillian Anderson “threw out” what she is still remembered for is that she came to the Vanity Fair 2001 party in a dress with a bare back to the tailbone, from under which a black thong did not mysteriously stick out at all.

Now, the controversial trend is being revived not only thanks to fashionistas, but also with the light hand of brands. We saw this at the Versace 2020 spring-summer show, where Bella Hadid defiled in a suit with a cropped top, from under which a thong peeked out.

Of course, this trend is far from clear to everyone, even fewer people dare to repeat it. But if it exists, then someone needs it. After all, his main task is to attract attention to himself, and he copes with it perfectly.
