200 doctors sound the alert in the face of a heart failure epidemic in France

An epidemic is brewing in France. Nothing to do with the Delta variant which worries more and more, according to cardiologists, it is about an epidemic of heart failure. This is a fatigue of the heart, which is no longer able to send enough blood to supply the whole body. A very serious disease, fatal in some cases. However, there is neither early detection nor appropriate care when a crisis occurs in a patient.

A vagueness in medical care

“I called my doctor who came, who warned the Samu, who himself warned the firefighters who ended up taking me to the hospital. Establishment which did not have a cardiology service”, testifies to the microphone from Europe 1 Philippe Muller, heart failure for 25 years, whose last attack took place a few weeks ago.

Faced with this silent phenomenon, some 200 doctors have formed a collective. For them, it is urgent to organize early detection of the disease and create a specific care network. “For rare diseases such as amyloidosis [dont environ 300 cas sont recensés en France, ndlr], you have referral centers “, explains Thibault Damy, cardiologist responsible for heart failure at Henri Mondor hospital in Créteil. Concretely,” patients can know, on the Internet, where to go for treatment “. But when you have a “heart failure, I challenge you to know in which hospital you can be taken care of,” he laments.

More and more French people concerned

This situation is all the more worrying as 1.5 million French people suffer from heart failure. And these should be more than two million within five years.
