Pink October starts this Saturday, it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A disease that still affects thousands of women in France. On the occasion, Europe 1 decided to take stock of breast cancer in key figures.

Each year, breast cancer affects nearly 59,000 women, and it still kills. On average, breast cancer causes 12,000 deaths per year in France. For women, it is also the leading cause of death from cancer. Today in France, less than one in two women over the age of 50 is checked every two years as recommended, regrets Dr. Anne Vincent Salomon. She is head of the diagnostic medicine center at the Curie Institute: “As soon as you feel something different in your chest, the skin of the blood or the blood changes. “, advises the doctor at the microphone of Europe 1.

“The earlier you take it, the simpler the treatment and the greater the chance of recovery,” she continues.

15% of breast cancer attributable to alcohol consumption

And prevention is just as important as screening because lifestyle has a key role. There are approximately 7,000 to 8,000 breast cancers each year that are alcohol-related and therefore potentially preventable. A growing proportion of breast cancers are also attributable to smoking (4.4%) and obesity and physical inactivity (10.6% of post-menopausal breast cancers, in women over 50).
