The pediatric department of La Timone hospital in Marseille is issuing the alert to the lack of resources of caregivers as the bronchiolitis epidemic makes a comeback. The Sud Santé union is calling for massive hiring because 15% of the beds are closed for lack of staff.

REPORTAGE

Cough, fever, difficulty breathing…if your child wakes up with these symptoms, he may have bronchiolitis, a sometimes dangerous disease that affects the whole territory. Nevertheless, in Marseille, bronchiolitis takes on a whole different measure. The Timone pediatric emergencies have been on strike since 6 a.m. on Monday morning. This strike is the last resort to alert on the state of the service, overwhelmed by an early epidemic, the passages for bronchiolitis have therefore doubled in one month. The Sud Santé union is calling for massive hiring because 15% of the beds are closed for lack of staff.

40% work overload

In the corridors of the Timone, the waiting rooms are saturated with the bronchiolitis epidemic. The work overload rises to 40% in services already under tension. “The red line has been crossed. Today, we have more patients and we have fewer staff. The staff is demoralized because you have to know that colleagues can’t even take their leave anymore and they really want to change Chemotherapy for children is postponed”, denounces Cadière Ben Ayad, Sud Santé delegate, at the microphone of Europe 1.

Lack of materials

This trade unionist is concerned about an increasingly frequent use of temporary workers. He also deplores a lack of material means: “Today, the staff arrives and discovers that they do not have the material to carry out their mission. I am talking about catheters, gowns, overgowns rather than running behind the patients , they run after the material”. Sud Santé expects much more for pediatric emergencies than the envelope of 150 million euros promised by Emmanuel Macron for the whole territory.
