The increase in cases of influenza and gastroenteritis, coupled with covid, worries scientists. The National Academy of Medicine recommends wearing a mask in closed places. “The coronavirus mutates, the vaccine does not do everything to fight against this pandemic and even against the flu”, declares Yves Buisson, epidemiologist at the Academy of Medicine for Europe 1.

If covid is on the decline, other seasonal viruses, such as influenza and gastroenteritis, have not had their last word. In order to avoid any resumption of the epidemic, the National Academy of Medicine recommends the return of an almost forgotten accessory: the mask. Indeed, according to the Academy, wearing a mask in transport, pharmacies or even stores is common sense. The institution fears a new wave of covid which would coincide with the arrival of the flu. There could therefore be coronavirus and flu co-infections which would lead to more serious cases and therefore the saturation of hospitals, already overwhelmed by an epidemic of bronchiolitis.

“The vaccine is not everything”

In addition, only 40% of over 80s received their second booster shot. Professor Yves Buisson, epidemiologist at the Academy of Medicine, recalls that vaccination is not enough: “the coronavirus mutates, the vaccine does not do everything to fight against this pandemic and even against the flu. And then, this immunity n is not very durable. It is insufficient, unfortunately, to protect against transmission.”

Pregnant women, seniors, patients with comorbidities are invited to wear an FFP2 mask to avoid infections, adds Professor Buisson. For others, the Academy of Medicine recommends a surgical mask that is easier to wear.
