According to information from Europe 1, two million condoms were distributed free of charge in January 2023 compared to only 500,000 during the same period last year. A direct consequence of the free use of these condoms for young people under 26, effective since January 1st.

In recent weeks, pharmacists can see the significant effect of free condoms for young people under 26 years. Last month, according to information from Europe 1, two million condoms were sold free of charge in pharmacies, compared to 500,000 in January 2022. At the time, a prescription was necessary to obtain them without paying anything. But since January 1, 2023, all minors and young people under the age of 26 can obtain them on simple request and completely free of charge. President Emmanuel Macron called this measure a small revolution.

90,000 beneficiaries

According to the Ministry of Health, around 90,000 young people were able to benefit from the device in the space of a month, three times more than last year. This time, more pharmacies are participating in this preventive measure since 16,000 of them issued at least one free protective box last month. Over the same period last year, they were only 12,000.

Good news as sexually transmitted infections increase in France with 5,000 new cases of HIV in 2021, 15% of which concerned young people under 25. The success of this measure with young people could help achieve the government’s goal of zero sexually transmitted diseases by 2030.
