How to check which medicines are now sold by prescription in Ukraine: detailed instructions

Now Ukrainians will need to get e-prescriptions for most popular medicines. Since April 1, about 60% of drugs have been introduced electronic prescriptions.

The Ministry of Health noted that the expansion of the list of prescription drugs did not happen, just all the drugs that were previously supposed to be dispensed by prescription can be purchased using the e-prescription. GLOBAL HAPPENINGS figured out how to check which medicines are now sold by prescription in Ukraine.

Which medicines require a prescription

Prescription medicines are sold only on the prescription of a doctor. These are, in particular:

  • Antibiotic preparations
  • Anticonvulsant antiepileptic drugs
  • Hormonal drugs
  • Contraceptive drugs
  • Pressure medications
  • Medicines for heart disease
  • Some types of anthelmintic drugs
  • Some allergy pills
  • Antipsychotics
  • Calming drugs
  • Steroid drugs
  • Some pain medications
  • Some cough medicines

For example, “magnikor”, “captopril”, “bisoprolol”, “diacarb” or “cardiomagnyl” will be dispensed exclusively by prescription.

Analgin, nimesil and their analogues also cannot be bought in the public domain.

As for cough medicine, “mukaltin”, ACC, vegetable syrups will be freely available. A prescription is required for medicines containing codeine and salbutamol (used mainly for inhalation).

Hormonal preparations – “Postinor”, “L-thyroxine”, “Momederm”, “Fenistil” will not be sold without a prescription.

Most of the allergy medicine will continue to be freely sold, with the exception of Suprastin and Dexamethasone.

Some medications may seem safe, but their use carries a high risk. Improper use or self-medication can lead to severe side effects.

How to know if you need a prescription for medicines

The instructions for all medicines indicate the medical use and conditions of dispensing.

Also, comprehensive information can be obtained on the website of the State Register of Medicines. Using the search is very easy.

  1. Enter the international name of the drug (i.e. active substance) in the search box.
  2. In the leftmost column of the table, open the drug registration certificate.
  3. After opening the drug profile, find the sub-item “dispensing conditions”.
  4. Check if it says “by prescription”.

If the prescription drug needs to be taken continuously

People who take a prescription drug on a regular basis will not need to see a doctor every time they get a prescription. If the treatment is long or you have a chronic illness, you can also get a second e-prescription remotely.

The system should record your diagnosis and medication prescription.

Earlier, GLOBAL HAPPENINGS said that new prices for medicines were set in Ukraine.
