Endocrine disruptors: UFC-Que Choisir alert on bisphenol in baby products

This Wednesday, UFC-Que Choisir published a study alerting to the presence of bisphenols in many baby products. Particularly dangerous for health, these endocrine disruptors can be found in products intended for oral consumption.

The consumer association UFC-Que Choisir has just published a study on the category of endocrine disruptors of bisphenols, the presence of which has been found in many baby products. On the one hand, we find bisphenol A, which is prohibited, in cans or water bottles intended for children, even though the dangerousness of these products has been known for more than ten years.

For the editor-in-chief of UFC-Que Choisir, Arnaud de Blauwe, this product has particularly harmful effects, both for the mother and for the child she is carrying. “It can promote miscarriages, low birth weight infants, and sexual and reproductive dysfunction. So it really is a very toxic substance,” he explains. Arnaud de Blauwe is all the more alarmed by the government’s inaction to remove these products. “We continued to find doses of bisphenol A. So we see that there is a real problem. It surprised us somewhat insofar as the French authorities want to be reassuring by saying that it is prohibited.”

Bisphenol found in babies’ teething areas

And there are also substitutes for bisphenol A, which are even more widely used since they are still authorized in a significant number of baby products. For the editor of the Consumers’ Union, these replacement products are no less dangerous. “It is true that there are a certain number of doubts, even proven or suspected, which show that these other bisphenols also present a certain number of health risks.”

“So here, there is a real concern to continue to find bisphenols in such quantities in the teething areas as well as in other baby products that come into direct contact with their mouths,” he adds. his arguments. The consumer association is thus calling for a ban on all these types of bisphenol, but this is not likely to happen immediately, as manufacturers are far from having found alternatives at reasonable costs.
