On May 20, the city of Libourne, in Gironde, is launching a “tiger mosquito weather forecast” to warn residents a week in advance of a strong arrival of these insects.

They are already there and there! Tiger mosquitoes, these striped insects, are now installed in 71 departments of France. Unpleasant bites that transmit diseases such as dengue or chikungunya. So, to avoid the invasion before summer, it is necessary to act now, before the hatching of the eggs. In Gironde, the mayor of Libourne will launch the tiger mosquito forecast this Saturday. A three-color dashboard to give the alert and also share good reflexes.

A device to be more vigilant

The humming of tiger mosquitoes ruins this walk, this barbecue in the garden or this sunbathing every year. In Gironde, the inhabitants of Libourne, near Bordeaux, are fed up. “80 to 90% of the shouting matches I get in the summer is: ‘Mr. Mayor, what are you doing against mosquitoes?'” explains the mayor, Philippe Buisson.

Hence the idea, to encourage the inhabitants of Libourne to empty all containers where water can stagnate, of this mosquito weather report launched by the municipality. “The mosquito weather forecast will take into account the number of tiger mosquitoes that we capture on our terminals and the weather forecast. And it will also take into account, thanks to our partner who can see the larval state of the mosquitoes with the biologist, evolution of the mosquito. It’s going to give a green, orange, red mosquito weather.”

If the weather is green, it will be enough to do the normal gestures. If the weather turns red, it will be urgent to act, details the city councilor.

A good idea for these people from Libourne. “There, we will be more vigilant”, explains a local resident. Another adds: “It’s a good thing.” The city has already installed 78 traps that suck up these mosquitoes. Nearly 40 additional devices will be deployed before the end of this year.
