Pressing from scientists, ‘act now or it will be late’

(ANSA) – ROME, NOVEMBER 22 – Running with third doses of the anti-Covid vaccine to curb the advance of the virus and immediately implement a tightening on measures to prevent infections, or it could be too late. The message that doctors and scientists are addressing to institutions in the face of the worsening of the epidemic curve in Italy and the increase in the number of deaths recorded in recent weeks is clear, while the Undersecretary of Health Andrea Costa launches an appeal to hurry up to book the calls that the Regions, from Monday 22, in advance of the initially planned date of 1 December, will also be able to open to citizens of the 40-59 age group.
A steady worsening epidemic trend confirmed by the daily bulletin of the Ministry of Health: 9,709 positives in the last 24 hours (yesterday there were 11,555) and 46 victims (yesterday 49). The positivity rate is 2%, stable compared to yesterday, on 487,109 molecular and antigenic swabs carried out in the last 24 hours. On the other hand, 520 patients are in intensive care, 8 more than yesterday, and 4,345 hospitalized wards, or 95 more in one day.
The need to accelerate with the recalls is therefore dictated by the numbers of the epidemic, warns Amerigo Cicchetti, director of Altems, the High School of Economics and Management of Health Systems of the Catholic University of Rome. For the “third consecutive week we record a 20% increase in the mortality figure for Covid. The vast majority – he explains – are unvaccinated, whose average age drops to about 60 years. This trend could grow further if we do not act immediately “. And the first measure, according to the expert, is precisely “to strongly incentivize third doses, even by reopening the hubs of the metropolises that have just closed”. Basically, he explains, there are three possible options at this point: “Use again the color bands for the risk in the different territories, implement the generalized obligation for the vaccine, or not make the vaccine mandatory but accelerate the third doses. The vaccination obligation for everyone, in any case – he specifies – I would keep it as a last option because it risks greatly exacerbating the positions “.
An appeal to “hurry up with the booking of third doses” then comes from Costa, who invites the Italians to “continue to have a sense of responsibility by respecting the rules, from the use of masks to hand hygiene. And we must accelerate, for this – he recalled – we have also given the Regions the possibility of anticipating, starting from Monday 22, the start of the administration of third doses to over 40s “. The undersecretary also launches a further appeal to the fans, so that they use the masks in the stadiums, making the sense of responsibility prevail. It will then be fundamental to vaccinate children under 12 when the green light from the regulatory bodies arrives, but on this point it must be clarified, he insists: “We must clearly say that when a vaccine is approved it means that the first benefits are given to those who receive it. . Woe to saying that we have to vaccinate the little ones to protect adults. Not so, it would be the wrong message “. Also according to Massimo Ciccozzi, director of the Medical Statistics and Molecular Epidemiology Unit of the Campus Bio-Medico in Rome, “now the priority is to accelerate the third doses, because for many people six months have passed since the primary cycle and therefore there is a decline in vaccination efficacy and coverage “. But at the same time it is necessary to act quickly on other fronts: “Push the use of the mask even outdoors if there are gatherings, supervise people who come from EU countries with high rates of infection with a swab upon entry into Italy and eliminate the possibility of the buffer for the purpose of obtaining the green pass, because – he concludes – there are too many false negatives, which can in fact invalidate the very usefulness of the pass “.
