the Delta variant could be in the majority by the end of August

Despite the decline of the coronavirus epidemic in France, the Delta variant could undermine the rest of the deconfinement, which began on May 3. This variant, 40 to 60% more contagious than the British variant named Alpha, could represent up to 90% of new infections in Europe and France by the end of August, ensures the European Center for Prevention and control of patients, even if it remains in the minority for the moment.

Still, the first signs of an increase in cases are visible. In the Landes, several active foci of transmission have been detected by the health authorities. The Delta variant now represents 70% of contaminations in this department where the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, accompanied by the Prime Minister, Jean Castex, will visit this Thursday.

Almost 40% of those over 60 not yet fully vaccinated

Several other epidemic foci have been detected in the country, in particular in the Bas-Rhin department and in Ile-de-France. Nationally, the variant now represents 12% of contaminations. And if targeted screening measures are adopted when a new cluster is discovered, the real solution remains vaccination with two doses, stress the experts.

According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, 40% of people over 60 are not yet fully vaccinated in Europe. Faced with this insufficient vaccination coverage, European experts do not exclude a return of the epidemic to the same level as at the end of last year if the barrier gestures are released too quickly this summer.
