Gimbe: cases have been growing for 5 weeks, pressure rises on hospitals. Call back late

In 18 Provinces there are over 150 Covid cases per 100,000 inhabitants: Trieste (674), Gorizia (492), Bolzano (442), Forlì-Cesena (311), Padua (274), Rimini (249), Aosta (248), Ravenna (214), Treviso (213), Venice (213), Vicenza (200), Pordenone (186), Udine (183), Fermo (172), Ascoli Piceno (166), Belluno (162), La Spezia (162 ) and Imperia (160). The monitoring of the Gimbe Foundation for the week 17-23 November 2021 reveals this. “When the incidence exceeds 150 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants – comments Nino Cartabellotta, Gimbe president – the directors must decide on any targeted restrictions to stem the spread”.

For the fifth consecutive week, the number of new weekly cases increased nationally (+ 27%) with a daily average more than quadrupled if we compare the 2,456 infections recorded on 15 October with the 9,866 recorded on 23 November. This was revealed by the monitoring of the Gimbe Foundation for the week 17-23 November 2021, compared to the previous one. The increase affects, with wide variations, all regions except Basilicata and drags up the curves on the hospital front: hospitalizations with symptoms grow by 15.8% (4,597 compared to 3,970) and intensive care by 16, 4% (560 vs 481).

The increase in viral circulation is well documented by the increase in both the positive / persons tested ratio (from 3.6% to 14.7%). Deaths are also increasing: 437 in the last 7 days (of which 25 referring to previous periods), with an average of 62 per day compared to 57 in the previous week. “On the hospital front – says Renata Gili, Head of Research on Health Services of the Gimbe Foundation – there is a further increase in the number of beds occupied by Covid patients: compared to the previous week, + 15.8% in the medical area and + 16.4% in intensive care”.

In absolute terms, the number of Covid patients in the medical area went from 2,371 on 16 October to 4,597 on 23 November 2021 (+ 93.9%) and that in intensive care from 338 on 25 October to 560 on 23 November 2021 (+ 65.7%). At national level, according to Agenas monitoring, as of November 23, the employment rate was 8% in the medical area and 6% in the critical area, with significant regional differences: “for the medical area, they exceed the threshold of 15 % Autonomous Province of Bolzano (16%) and Friuli-Venezia Giulia (18%) which with 14% exceeds even that of 10% for the critical area “.

Gimbe, late calls, concern 22.6 million by 2021
It is necessary to reach 600 thousand doses per day. Stable new vaccinates
In the last week, the first doses of vaccine administered remained stable at 127,000, “a number which, although small, demonstrates that there is still the possibility of convincing the undecided”. Instead, supplies of vaccines resume. While the doses of the boosters are slightly increasing but in “net delay”: “To cover the people called to take the third dose by December 31st, or 22.6 million, the rate should rise to 600,000 doses per day”. This is what emerges from the new independent monitoring of the Gimbe Foundation.

According to ministerial indications, Gimbe estimates, the people who can receive the booster dose by the end of 2021 are a total of 27.3 million: of which 15.19 million over 60 who have completed the cycle with any vaccine by 3 August; 822,000 under-60s who received Johnson & Johnson by 3 August; 11.28 million people aged 40 to 59 who completed their vaccination course with Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca by 3 August.

Considering that to date 3.91 million booster doses and 764 thousand additional doses have already been administered, “by December 31, up to 22.62 million third doses should be administered, equal to an average of over 610 thousand doses per day. “, it is read. “In order to contain the fourth wave in our country – explains President Gimbe Nino Cartabellotta – on the vaccine front, there is an indisputable need to reach as many people as possible not yet vaccinated, and to accelerate with the administration of third doses, especially in the over 60s. and in the frail “.

On this front, adds Cartabellotta, “2.1 million over 80, 4.4 million 70-79 year olds, 5.1 million 60-69 year olds and 6.2 million 50-59 year olds are particularly worrying. ‘vaccination efficacy at 6 months and in the face of the upcoming Christmas holidays which will certainly imply an increase in social contacts indoors, are still discovered by the booster dose “.
