Children with difficult asthma more at risk of hospitalization for Covid

(ANSA) – ROME, 01 DEC – Children with poorly controlled asthma (for example those who have had to resort to hospital treatment for an asthma attack) are up to six times more at risk of hospitalization in the event of Covid and for this they go vaccinated early: this is what was stated by experts from the Universities of Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Strathclyde and St Andrews in an article in Lancet Respiratory Medicine.

For the study, the experts used data collected as part of the vast Scottish research project “EAVE II Covid-19 surveillance platform”, containing some 750,000 anonymous data relating to children aged 5-17, including 63,463 children with asthma.

Among the latter there were 4,339 confirmed cases of Covid-19 between 1 March 2020 and 27 July 2021, of which 67 ended up in hospital. Among children without asthma there were 40,231 confirmed cases of Covid-19, of which 382 ended up in hospital.

Well, it emerged that 255 for every 100,000 asthmatic children with uncontrolled disease were hospitalized for Covid-19 against 54 every 100,000 children without asthma and 91 for 100,000 peers with respiratory disease but always under control.

The researchers therefore suggest giving priority to children with asthma for Covid vaccination in this age group, especially those whose respiratory disease is not well controlled and has already been in itself the cause of hospitalization or repeated therapies with cortisone. (HANDLE).
