Is general anesthesia dangerous for health?

What impact does general anesthesia have on our body and our health? This is the question that Marina asks herself this Thursday in the show “Sans Rendez-vous”, at the approach of her appointment to have her wisdom teeth removed. For Dr. André Chaine, general anesthesia is not dangerous for a healthy person.

The program Sans Rendez-vous from Europe 1 answers listeners’ health questions every day. This Thursday, Marina wonders if she should do a general anesthesia when she has her wisdom teeth removed, fearing that this anesthesia is dangerous for the body. For Dr. André Chaine, maxillofacial surgeon and stomatologist, general anesthesia is not dangerous to health for an individual with no comorbidity.

Marina’s question

“I have to remove my wisdom teeth and I heard that we can do general anesthesia but I’m afraid it will be dangerous for the body. Should I ask for local anesthesia instead?”

André Chaine’s response

“We often wonder whether to use general anesthesia or local anesthesia to remove wisdom teeth. In practice, there are medical reasons that motivate both. The first reason is medical: it is the difficulty linked to the anatomical situation of the teeth. Sometimes when the teeth are very deeply impacted or in abnormal positions, it is preferable to give a general anesthesia. It is more comfortable, we do not hear what happens and it usually happens over a day.

It is often believed that general anesthesia is dangerous for the state of health. In practice, it has been proven that doing a general anesthesia when you have no comorbid health, is less risky than taking a car trip without a seat belt. The choice of local anesthesia may be preferred when it comes to easy-to-remove wisdom teeth. At that time, things are going very well in the office and in half an hour, the matter is settled. ”
