The NGO Médecins du Monde (MDM) on Wednesday condemned the principle of a health pass in France which it considers “discriminatory”, calling for “unfettered” access for the most vulnerable people to vaccination. In a press release, Médecins du Monde pronounces “against the health pass as long as everyone does not have effective access to vaccination”. On the merits of the bill, on which the Constitutional Council is due to vote on Thursday, Médecins du Monde believes that the health pass is a “disguised vaccination obligation, discriminating against the unvaccinated”.
“Médecins du Monde refuses any form of opposition and inequality of rights between vaccinated and unvaccinated people, any form of obligation of control by employers, any obstacle to the movement of people or their access to healthcare facilities, administrative, or cultural “, insists its president, Carine Rolland, general practitioner by profession. The medical solidarity organization cites the case of people “excluded from care” or facing the “digital divide or administrative barriers”, in particular homeless people, migrants, sex workers or unaccompanied minors.
A “risk of sliding towards generalized social surveillance practices”
The government on Tuesday asked the prefects and directors general of ARS to accelerate its policy of “going towards” for the vaccination of asylum seekers and precarious refugees, reiterating its objective set on July 5 to vaccinate them all “by now end of August”. Citing the position on this subject of the Defender of Rights, MDM is also worried about a “risk of sliding towards generalized social surveillance practices”.
The anti-Covid bill, which was adopted definitively on July 25 by Parliament, makes compulsory the vaccination of staff in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and retirement homes, firefighters, certain soldiers, as well as professionals and volunteers with the elderly, including at home. An extension of the health pass is also planned for August 9. It has already been applied in cultural and leisure venues since July 21.
