Five surprising tips to overcome stress

Meditation, sports activities, essential oils … There are many tips to calm stress. And yet, many of us still suffer from anxiety on a daily basis. How to get rid of it once and for all? Guest in Well done for you on Europe 1, psychiatrist David Gourion delivers five new techniques to become ultra Zen.

Imagine yourself as king or queen

It’s a small reference to a poem by Henley called Invictus : “As narrow as the path, although I am accused and blamed. I am the master of my destiny. I am the captain of my soul”. We are all captains of our soul. We do not control our thoughts, but on the other hand, we can control the processes, like a conductor. This is called the cognition neuroscience method and therefore lets these clouds and worries pass and we try not to focus too much on it.

Detect fake news from our brain

Some people worry when everything is going well. “I constantly need to rekindle the flame of anxiety,” a patient told psychiatrist David Gurion. It’s like her brain is set to always detect danger, like she’s scanning and anticipating it. The problem with this control mechanism is that you don’t live in the moment. We are constantly in the past, brooding over supposed errors, or in the future which does not yet exist. But the problems that we anticipate do not present themselves or present themselves differently from what we anticipated.

Do a rumination exercise

You can take a recent problem and ruminate for a quarter of an hour. If we have the feeling that it is effective and that it has been useful, we can keep this process of rumination. But, if we realize that ruminating at 11:30 p.m. in our bed has not solved our problems, it is the beginning of a realization. We can monitor our stress level. It is already something.

Switch to chat mode

Cats have this ability to change their behavior and mood very quickly. They sleep completely then switch to a hyper attentive mode, as if their life was at stake. And they do the opposite, which is even more interesting. People who suffer from stress often get stuck on their worries. We should succeed in making our attention more flexible, like cats.

Learn to breathe with a straw

This technique helps prevent panic attacks. Exercise teaches us to breathe slowly. We put our hands on our stomach, which should swell. We breathe in very slowly. We keep the air for 4/5 seconds once we have inspired and then we breathe again, symbol of cardiac coherence.
