US-backed Syrian fighters warn of new Turkish attack; Russia on alert

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), backed by the United Statessaid on Thursday that the threat of a new Turkish offensive in northern Syria could create a humanitarian crisis and jeopardize their campaign against Islamic State.

SDF commander Mazloum Abdi urged all parties to “avoid further tragedies and support de-escalation”, warning that a new attack could trigger further displacement in the 11-year-old Syrian conflict.

Turkey, which has carried out four operations in northern Syria since 2016, has pledged a new offensive against the Kurdish YPG militia, the spearhead of the SDF that controls swathes of territory on the Turkish border.

although the Turkey sees Kurdish-led forces in Syria as terrorists and a national security threat, the United States sees the SDF as an ally that helped drive the Islamic State out of large swaths of Syria.

Turkey is one of several powers involved in the war in Syria, where the Russia supports the current government.

Russia, expressing its apprehension, said it expects Turkey to “refrain from actions that could lead to a dangerous deterioration of the already difficult situation in Syria”.

A spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry told the Interfax news agency that if Ankara were to launch an attack, it would represent a direct violation of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and could lead to an escalation in tensions.
