Healthy body, healthy mind (and bills up to date!)

When we talk about organizational well-being, the idea of a healthy, ethical, transparent environment that values people’s differences immediately comes to mind.

Today, more than ever, companies are expected to build and implement organizational policies aimed at the health of employees and, when I talk about health, I’m talking about physical, mental and financial health.

Not long ago, when we talked about employee health, we were more focused on something physical, but with the pandemic of COVID-19, that all changed. And I can say that fortunately it has changed for the better, at least from this angle, mainly because it has become something basic and essential for organizations to offer a healthy environment for their employees, prioritizing well-being as a whole.

For this, it is necessary to have well-aligned and defined services and policies, in addition to professionals – C-Levels, managers and HR – determined to do good for the different publics, offering an environment that values collective health.

Although we are moving towards a more harmonious scenario, unfortunately the steps towards implementing sound policies are still slow and are not enough to produce long-term structural changes.

A Mercer survey shows that eight out of 10 workers have symptoms of burnout, and remote work has increased anxiety, and only four in 10 companies are acting on these three fronts. This is very worrying.

Companies need to understand once and for all that they play a fundamental role in improving and maintaining the well-being of their employees and, consequently, of society.

Salary at the end of the month and basic benefits, such as meal vouchers and transport vouchers, for example, no longer guarantee the permanence of anyone in a company, as pointed out by research that shows that having a healthy environment makes workers stay four times more than the average and are four times more satisfied than the average.

The guarantee of a harmonious, ethical, transparent space, with policies and incentives related to the health area – physical, mental and financial – for employees, has become mandatory for the permanence of these professionals and even for the growth of any business, generated from a good image in the eyes of public opinion. If C-Levels, managers and HR leaders turn a blind eye to issues like these, there’s no way to keep a company going.

Therefore, attention!

To seek a healthier environment, you – leaders, managers and HR professionals – can:

  1. Healthy environment starts with an environment where people can speak their mind, and thus preserve their mental health, 7 in 10 talents today choose companies where they can be themselves.
  2. Talents expect companies to help them take better care of their physical, mental and financial health. You don’t need to provide everything, but create stimuli, providing education and information for people to take better care of their health, and manage their financial resources.
  3. A healthy environment starts with example, especially leadership. Having leaders who really know how to take a vacation (and don’t keep sending notes charging pending) and take care of their health makes a big difference.
