Brazil wins biological material for monkeypox vaccine

O Brazil received today (5) the biological material needed to start the development of a vaccine against monkeypox, or monkeypox.

The material known technically as vaccine virus seeds was donated by the National Institutes of Health (NHI), the medical research agency of the United States. United Statesfor Center Technology in vaccines (CT Vaccines) at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG).

This is the first step towards the development of a national vaccine against the disease. With this material, it is possible to develop the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API), which is the raw material for the production of vaccines.

CTVacinas will receive the lot and will work in partnership with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), through the Institute of Technology in Immunobiologicals (Biomanguinhos).

The initiative is one of the actions defined as a priority by Brazilian researchers who are part of the ChamberPOX Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI).

Formed in May of this year, the group formed by eight Brazilian researchers specializing in smallpox and other poxviruses advises the MCTI on the subject in relation to research, development and innovation.

Monkeypox is a disease caused by a virus and transmitted by close or intimate contact with an infected person with skin lesions.

Contact can be through a hug, kiss, massage, sexual intercourse or respiratory secretions.

Transmission also occurs through contact with objects, fabrics (clothes, bedding or towels) and surfaces that have been used by the patient.
